Breakfast | Hot and Cold Cereals

Breakfast element 1 is the "Hot and Cold Cereals" section.

Frankly, I don't eat cold cereals. And what they do is they give you a plastic bowl, tiny plastic tub (or a tiny cardboard box) of the branded cold cereal you specify, and a small carton of milk (Clover brand). It's exactly what you'd expect.

My reviews will concentrate on the "hot" cereals:

Oatmeal

Cream of Wheat

Jook with Chicken

Oatmeal

(foreground, blue bowl, partially cut off)

Personal rating: 👎 (thumb down)

Completely tasteless, and barely lukewarm when it get to your room, it is just tasteless glops of "gruel" owing to completely lack of texture. Adding those tiny packets of salt and pepper does NOT help. I'd recommend against ordering oatmeal.

The rest of the tray, from top to bottom, are yogurt (Activia), mixed fruit cup, scrambled eggs and "home fries", hot tea (blue plastic mug).

Cream of Wheat

(top left corner of tray)

Personal rating: 😐 (neutral face)

The texture visually is almost indistinguishable from oatmeal, but you can taste the difference if you put a small portion in your mouth. Unfortunately, they do NOT add any salt or anything else in the prep, so it is ALMOST as tasteless as oatmeal. Still, it is SLIGHTLY more better tasting than oatmeal, IMHO.

The rest of the tray from top to bottom, are fruit cup, turkey sausage patty, scrambled eggs (with packet of pepper spread on it), fruit cup, hot tea.

Jook with Chicken

(Top right of tray, with spoon in the bowl)

Personal rating: 👍(thumb up)

Jook is Cantonese for "rice porride",and you can taste the itty bitty bits of chicken that you don't even have to chew. You can just swallow the bits. And because there's actual taste of chicken, this, IMHO, tastes much much better than oatmeal or cream of wheat. Adding that tiny salt packet may improve the taste even more, but it's edible WITHOUT condiments.

And what's even better, it's relatively low-carb (9, vs 27 for oatmeal or cream of wheat) for the same portion size!  It's great if you're on a carb-control diet.

What's on the rest of the plate, from left to right and top to down: 2% milk (Clover), Activia yogurt, hot water (for hot tea), jook with chicken in bowl, boiled egg (deshelled), turkey sausage patty, scrambled eggs.

Welcome

Welcome to Picky Patient's Guide to Sutter Health Patient Menu!  Click on "Start Here" in the menu bar if you are not sure where to go.  As a former patient, I took some photos, and decided to rate the individual items.  This is meant to be a totally un-serious look at "hospital food", and no infringement or disparagement was intended. I understand it's difficult to make meals for hundreds, if not thousands of people at a time. And the ratings are a bit of... tongue-in-cheek. Any way, on with the guide.
